Hello Richard, thought I'd comment on your posting. I'm an average Scot with many many English friends. My best buddy is from Surrey (a soft southerner :-)). I lived in London for 5 years and concluded that on these Islands we suffer from identify crisis because of the incorrect or interchangeable use of "British" with "English". Even the UK media get it wrong. Lets be honest ... being the smaller neighbours we Scots, N-Irish and Welsh will ALWAYS want you to lose at football, cricket and every other sport :-) it goes with the territory of being the larger sibling. Similarly, the Portugese with the Spanish, the Norwegians with the Swedish, the Canadians with the US have a similar relationship. It's easier still for us to support the opposition when our media overlaps as it does... london centric reports pitched at middle england audience ! cool if you're from there, a tad annoying if your not. I listened to Dalton Grant (ex-British high jumper) and seemingly nice guy referring to an "English" Olympic games... even "london games" is less alienating. I'd be happy if "Britain" or "British" was binned. The correct term for our government is UK. I wasn't sure what you'd hoped to achieve by bringing back the british empire, but if you really mean this in English cultural terms then this is a fair ambition for England and the English. You could start using the English flag not the "British" flag. They are not interchangeable as many seem to forget, but please keep your campaign to England not UK..... oh and if you decide to build a new Parliament building.... hope you're better at controlling the budget than us.

It's possible to be British and English at the same time - I am, I'm just English first and British second.

There's nothing wrong with promoting both but he's definitely English, I can vouch for that. :D

Is it fair to bring back the British Empire when Britain's in such a post-1992-caused mess? Bring back 'Great Britain', then a British Empire!

I for one don't want the Empire back. If I had been alive in its day it would have been an honour to serve.

But that's history, all empires fall. OK what now?

Personally I'd like to see a small independent country on the edge of Europe that invested in itself, invested in 21st century technology, and had a fantastic education system.

On that was just, peaceful and forward looking. At peace with our neighbors and a force for good in the world.

Call me an idealist if you like :)

Proud to be Scottish, proud of the Empire.

Bring back gun boat diplomacy and stop the destruction of the great BRITISH Navy.
